How To Get Involved?

People can get involved in so many different ways – time banking is about sharing all the skills a community has to offer, and that can be anything from dog walking to reiki, DIY to guitar lessons. Everyone’s time is valued equally (for every hour you volunteer, you get one hours time credit to spend on something you want) and the more the time credits are spent, the more they circulate around the system. Mission Statement/Purpose

Time Banking UK is a national charity which promotes time banking throughout the UK by campaigning, supporting time banks and helping individuals and groups who want to set up a time bank. Time banking is about developing thriving communities and helping people to feel healthier and happier by becoming active citizens. Time banking is for everyone and connects all kinds of people in all kinds of ways by using time credits as a medium of exchange – you give an hour of help and earn one time credit. You can then use that time credit to buy the help you need from other members or on a range of cultural, learning or leisure activities.

Charity Profile

Time Banking UK has been around for 10 years now, and more than 600,000 hours have been traded nationwide. People get involved in time banking for all different types of reasons, but the benefits of getting involved are almost always the same; widening your social circle and making new friends, a feeling of “doing your bit” for the community as well as getting something that you want back in return, but above all, it’s fun. You won’t be asked to do anything you don’t want to do, and the various social events held by all time banks are always a great laugh. Time banking is also about thanking people for what they do. For example, by giving their time to plant trees, to paint a mural or organise a concert young people can spend their time credits on trips out, an hour at the gym, quad biking and many other things. Sylivia & Fred from Royston Time Bank says: “I believe that when you give something, you give a part of yourself as well. Society has lost a lot of its roots. People are too involved in themselves, families break down and there’s a lot of isolation. In our wider society we have limited influence, but at least with time banking we can at least make a difference through our friends, families and in our communities”.
